Experience

Customer Experience Representative, Chapters 784, Newmarket
2004- PRESENT

During my seven years working for Indigo Books and Music, I was responsible for a variety of different tasks. Most recently these duties involved visual merchandising of the brand’s growing gift department, as well as general cashier and bookselling responsibilities. In addition, I was our store’s leading KOBO ‘experts’, acting as basic tech. support when possible and introducing customers to the future of reading.  Regardless of my specific duties, the role of CER required an extensive knowledge of store functions and the book industry, as well as solid communication and customer service skills.

Intern, Open Book: Toronto
MAY 2010 – SEPTEMBER 2010

As an intern at Open Book: Toronto,  I was in close contact with authors, illustrators, publishers and publicists alike. In addition to interviewing major Canadian literary figures and writing news items, I was also responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the site. This involved a solid knowledge of web-based communication, as well as a working knowledge of HTML. It also required that I be up-to-date on the Canadian book industry news.

Customer Service Representative, Bluenotes 9105, Newmarket
AUGUST 2009- AUGUST 2010

Here, I predominantly worked cash and sales floor, communicating to customers recent promotions and deals. This also involved selling store loyalty cards, and suggesting suitable add-on purchases based on customers needs.

Communications Specialist,  Newmarket,
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2008

As a Communications Specialist, I wrote and edited press releases, later to be published in the Era Banner and Toronto Star, for a local Member of Parliament candidate. This job required that I carefully edit and reconstruct rough summaries, rewording them for grammar and clarity, but also ensuring that they properly convey the ideas of the client to a specific target audience. This involved understanding the intended meaning of the writer, and carefully manipulating that intended meaning so that it comes across as clear, concise and accurate. This candidate has since been successfully elected into office. For approximately a year after, I remained on retainer for JDC Management Services Ltd., ensuring that all press releases were error-free, and edited within strict deadline times, sometimes with turn-around time as little as an hour.

Education

University of Toronto, Toronto Ontario, Hon. BA 2008.

 Skills

Due to my extensive experience in customer service, and the communication skills required to fulfill each of my volunteer/intern positions correctly, I have developed strong interpersonal relations over the years.  My passion for the written words means I am both well-versed in editing and copywriting, and also well-informed when it comes to industry news and events. I am also relatively skilled at web-design,  as I have basic knowledge of both HTML and CSS. When it is required that I learn new skills, I do so quickly and eagerly.
